Pretty funny he mentions global warming. The reason we drink burgundy is that theentire region was under the sea 150,000,000+ years ago. The climate has always been changing. You climate Nazis need to get a grip.

Some years ago i got lucky and was given the opportunity to taste Le Monrachet Grand Cru and it left me deeply impressed. It was nowwhere near as broadshouldered and vanilly as stuff from overseas, but concentrated, rich, refined and detailed, with a finish that lasted a minute easily. I envision this must be what heaven feels like🤗

I found only one topic missing in this thorough video. "Vintage or Producer", especially in Europe. California doesn't have the wild swings in vintage quality, so it isn't that important. For me, Buying the Producer in Bordeaux is lazy. Buying the Vintage takes more effort, but has a much higher reward. Why would you want to spend $500/bottle for a 1st Growth(now, a Great price, but using a Short-hand example, 93 Points) in an off-vintage, when you could buy previous great vintages of lower priced($50-100), well-regarded 3rd-5th Growth producers(94-97 Points), that are still available in a quality wine shop? Why would you buy a pedestrian 2nd Growth, Dufort-Vivens(90 Points) instead of an Excellent 3rd, Giscours or 5th, Grand Puy Lacoste(95-97 Points) for the same price, with a little more effort? St Emilion has great wines(exotic, fruit-forward flavors) in most recent vintages(2015-2022) for $35-75(94-97 pts). I'm not a big fan of 2nd-label wines(Alter-Ego, Carruades de Lafite) for the same reason. Each Appellation has its own similar, GENERAL flavors(St Julien--sour cherry, Ste Estephe--more tannic, etc.). $100-300 for a 94 Point 2nd label, or $60-125 for a 95-97 Point, D'Issan, Pontet Canet to get the same general flavors? I recommend only buying a few bottles in a off-vintages, IF you "must taste the vintage" at a cheaper price. Otherwise, forget it.

Im beginning to think that, of course, the soil is of the most importance - as the saying goes, it is only as good as the soil. But i think it isn't all this yeast or grape blabber that many say; it is the physical process they do with the crushed grape, which produces/makes it alcohol; grape is just an ideal fruit for the procedure - theoretically, you could make alcohol (& thus champagne - mainly called so because of the region, but also, i'm assuming, because of particularities to the procedures done in the region of champagne) from oranges, and cucumbers. Yes cucumbers too, because all vegetables are actually fruits too. There are no vegetables, only fruits. My guess is pumpkin, alongside grape, and watermelon, would be ideal for alcohol, and thus champagne - my favourite. Anyhow, as i was saying. Im also beginning to think it is just the procedure they do with the crushed fruit, that turns it into alcohol. BUT, due to the importance of the soil - havent they tested (or do they do this already) various rituals to regularly be done nearby the soil, and where it is processed. I imagine there must be some which would be conducive for making a true work of art of the champagne.

Leaving the investment bit to one side, I think you really need to do some serious drinking (a dirty job but someone's got to do it) and work out what you really like and then zone in on that. Some will love the muscularity of NsG, some will not. Some will like an accent on perfume and elegance, others the power of Vosne Romanee. Even within those areas, there will be issues around oak treatment, vineyard management (yield and ripeness, for example) etc. from maker to maker and even within a maker's range. It also helps to work out why you are going to cellar. Age is a thing in its own right for some, but for me it is a means to an end. I age for balance - time for tannins to soften and resolve, flavours to integrate. I quite like old characters in wine but for me balance is the thing. Others may find they prefer a wine that is still very fresh and fruit forward - so cellaring will be shorter. It can also be helpful to buy some old bottles at auction of a wine you are thinking of buying to cellar. Hope that helps a bit. Buying wine as an investment, I think, is not a great way to make money, though some do well from it. By the time you allow for inflation, no interest payments/dividends and what are commonly quite high transaction costs (auction fee, taxes etc.) I think there are much better ways to make money. I also think wine is for drinking.
